California 50-hour log: DL 603 and the permit signature

For the teen learner-permit path. Rule data verified 2026-09-21; linked paperwork checked 27 September 2026.

California requires 50 hours of supervised practice, including 10 at night. The DL 603 log is optional; the parent or guardian certifies completion by signing the instruction permit.

Which paper does what?

The DMV Parent-Teen Training Guide (DL 603) includes a practice log. Use it to organise dates and day/night time, or keep another accurate record. An app printout helps you total the practice; it does not replace the permit signature.

Before the driving test, hold the permit for at least 6 months and complete the practice. The parent or guardian signs the instruction permit to certify it. Follow the DMV application checklist for the remaining course, training and test requirements.

A filled-in example: separate practice from certification

Illustrative entries, not a completed application. Classify night using the actual conditions; a clock time alone does not establish darkness.

Mistakes that leave the paperwork unfinished

Keep the running log during practice; check the permit signature and DMV checklist before the appointment. The log and the certification serve different purposes.

Requirements are summarised from the official sources linked above and can change; your state's own instructions always take precedence.
